Altaussee is not a place that can be explained. You arrive and quickly sense that different rules apply here. Between Lake Altaussee, the Loser and the Trisselwand, a community lives to its own rhythm, without adjusting it for anyone.
A holiday in Altaussee is not about seeing as much as possible. It is about simply being here. Walking by the lake without a destination. Letting your gaze rest on the mountains without needing to capture the moment. And realising that down-to-earth authenticity is not a concept here it is everyday life.
Altaussee asks nothing of you.
But it stays with you.
Hiking is simply part of life in Altaussee. Even if you arrive with the intention of taking it slow, you will soon notice how the landscape draws you outside. Paths around Lake Altaussee, gentle walks through the Ausseerland or longer mountain tours all begin right in the village on foot and at your own pace. For many, the first route leads once around the lake. Leisurely, sporty or somewhere in between.
Much can be discovered around Altaussee on two wheels, from relaxed rides along the lakeshore to longer tours into the Salzkammergut region. Those who stay a little longer quickly expand their routes beyond the village and explore the area just as comfortably by e-bike as by mountain bike or road bike. A special experience is the Augst Trail on the Loser. A descent of around three kilometres over roots and stones that reveals the mountain from an entirely new perspective challenging, varied and unmistakably Altaussee.
The lakes of the Salzkammergut are known for their clear, refreshing temperatures even in summer. Those who prefer to experience the scenery from the water can step into a boat and see Lake Altaussee from a different angle. A particular highlight is Austria’s first solar-powered boat, operating on Lake Altaussee. It glides silently across the water to the Seewiese and back, making the journey itself part of the experience. As places are limited, planning ahead is recommended.
Around Lake Altaussee, you will find not only bathing areas but also beach volleyball courts, tennis courts and play areas for children. While some stay active, others enjoy relaxing by the lakeshore, with views of water and mountains.
Altaussee is recognised as a climatic health resort, and the graduation tower is part of this tradition. Brine water trickles over branches, creating a humid, salty air that many find soothing. A walk through the facility combines gentle movement with fresh air and a distinctive sensory experience.
Salt mining has shaped Altaussee for centuries and remains part of the village’s identity to this day. A visit to the Altaussee Salt Mine leads deep underground, through narrow tunnels and vast chambers, and into stories that reach far beyond the mountain itself. Writers, composers and artists have also chosen the Ausseerland as their home or retreat. At the Literature Museum Altaussee, this cultural heritage can be discovered at a quiet pace among books, thoughts and traces of time.
