The Hoferhaus

Well-known personalities have stayed at the Hoferhaus at Chlumeckyplatz No. 2 for more than 500 years.

In 1511, Emperor Maximilian stayed with the then salt mill worker in this late Gothic building.

Now it is you who will fill the historic walls with life for a few days, weeks or even several times a year.

Around 1520 the house was decorated with beautiful frescoes.

They depict St. Sebastian, Anna Selbdritt (the depiction of St. Anna with her daughter Mary and baby Jesus) and St. Florian.

They are the oldest frescoes of Central Europe in a bourgeois house.

The frescoes on the first floor portray scenes of the history of Samson.

The Hoferhaus has been in the possession of the family for over 200 years, not only taking care of the preservation of this historically important monument, but also associates with Obermedizinalrat Dr. med. Konrad Hofer, who lived in this house at a point of time­– a significant citizen of the town of Bad Aussee

An outstanding climber, Mr. OMR Hofer along with his uncle was responsible for the utilization of the Sulphur spring. He also co-founded the Real secondary school in this area. His wife Gertrude Hofer, the soul of the house, was a well-known painter and journalist, who was known beyond the borders of Ausseerland and was able to bring many artists, actors and intellectuals to the Hoferhaus.

There is hardly a household in Bad Aussee which did not boast an exquisite watercolour painting on it’s wall made by her.
